Bush Was Promised That There'd Be No Math

Speaking from the High Horse Room at the White House, Bush sneered at the "narrow margin" by which the 2008 troop withdrawal measure passed the House.

218 out of 430 votes.

That's 50.7%.

If that number sounds familiar, it's because that's how many votes Bush got in 2004:

50.7%

Back then, he claimed 50.7% was a "mandate" that gave him "political capital."

Of course, I'm sure 50.7% seemed like a lot to Bush, since in the 2000 debacle he failed to crack 48%.

I guess margins must seem wider the closer you are to them.
